JIS B5 paper size
182 × 257 mm
7.17 × 10.12 inches · 18.2 × 25.7 cm · aspect ratio 1:1.41
JIS B5 size is 182 × 257 mm. Those are the JIS B5 dimensions a printer works to; the same sheet in centimetres, inches, points and pixels is below.
What JIS B5 is for
JIS B5 is 182 × 257 mm. The most-used JIS B size and the standard notebook and textbook page in Japan — every Japanese stationery brand builds around it. ISO B5 is 176 × 250 mm, six millimetres narrower and seven shorter, which is why an imported B5 binder does not quite fit a domestic B5 pad.
JIS B5 dimensions in every unit
| Unit | Width | Height |
|---|---|---|
| Millimetres | 182 mm | 257 mm |
| Centimetres | 18.2 cm | 25.7 cm |
| Inches | 7.17 in | 10.12 in |
| Points (PostScript) | 516 pt | 729 pt |
JIS B5 in pixels
Pixel dimensions depend entirely on the resolution you are working at — there is no single "pixel size" for a sheet of paper. JIS B5 size in pixels has every resolution, with file sizes and canvas setup.
| Resolution | Pixels | Use |
|---|---|---|
| 72 DPI | 516 × 729 | Screen preview only — far too coarse to print |
| 150 DPI | 1075 × 1518 | Draft printing, internal documents |
| 300 DPI | 2150 × 3035 | The standard for commercial print |
| 600 DPI | 4299 × 6071 | Fine detail, line art, archival scanning |
Setting up a print document? Use 300 DPI and add 3 mm of bleed on every edge unless your printer specifies otherwise.
How JIS B5 relates to the rest of the series
JIS B0 is defined as 1.5 square metres, where ISO A0 is one. JIS B5 is that sheet halved 5 times, so its area is 0.0469 m² and 32 of them tile one JIS B0.
That 1.5 against 1 is why the series exists: at 182 × 257 mm, JIS B5 is about 22% longer on each edge than A5 (148 × 210 mm), filling the gap the A series leaves between one size and the next.
It is not the same sheet as ISO B5, which is 176 × 250 mm. The two standards share every name in the series and agree on none of the sizes, so a tray, binder or sleeve cut for one will not take the other. Ask a printer for "B5" outside Japan and you will get the ISO sheet.
Scaling between neighbouring JIS B sizes is the same √2 as the A series — 141% up, 71% down — because JIS B is built by halving too. Only the starting area differs.
