What ARCH E1 is for
ARCH E1 is 30 × 42 inches, six inches narrower and six shorter than ARCH E, and it is the odd member of the family. Every other size in the series is a doubling of a smaller one; E1 is not a doubling of anything and nothing halves into it, so it reduces cleanly to no other sheet and a drawing laid out for it cannot simply be moved to E. It persists because a 30-inch plotter roll is a common stock width and because E1 fits binders, racks and tubes that will not take a 36-inch sheet.
