What ANSI D is for
ANSI D at 22 × 34 inches is the workhorse of the American drawing office — a D-size plot is the default for architectural floor plans and mechanical assemblies detailed enough to need the room. It is eight Letter sheets in area. Because the ANSI series alternates aspect ratio at each step, a drawing that fills ANSI D will not fill ANSI E without either distortion or empty margin, which is why title blocks are drawn to a size rather than scaled between them.

How ANSI D relates to the rest of the series

Letter vs A4
Letter is 6 mm wider and 18 mm shorter than A4. That small difference is why a PDF laid out for A4 prints with clipped edges or unexpected margins on US paper, and why "Fit to page" exists in every print dialog. There is no scaling factor that makes them match — the aspect ratios genuinely differ (1:1.294 for Letter, 1:1.414 for A4).
