What changes in this conversion
- Vector becomes pixels. SVG is resolution-independent; PNG is a fixed grid. Set a max width above that is at least as large as the biggest size the image will be displayed at, because you cannot enlarge it later without blurring.
- Metadata is dropped. EXIF data — including GPS coordinates, camera model and timestamps — does not survive the canvas. That is a useful privacy side effect before sharing photos.
About SVG
SVG is a vector format — an XML description of shapes rather than a grid of pixels — so it stays sharp at any size. Converting it to a raster format fixes it at one resolution.
About PNG
PNG is a lossless raster format with full alpha transparency. It is the right choice for screenshots, logos, icons and line art, and a poor one for photographs, where it produces files several times larger than JPEG.
