What it does with your file

The file is read with the browser's own file API, parsed in this tab and drawn as a table. Nothing is sent anywhere: there is no server behind this page that could receive it. That matters for the files people most often need to look at quickly — customer exports, payroll sheets, order lists, logs.

  • Sorting compares numbers as numbers, so 9 comes before 10, and understands thousands separators such as 1,250. Dates written as 2026-10-24 sort correctly because that form sorts the same as text. Everything else sorts alphabetically, with numbers inside text compared by value (item2 before item10).
  • Filters are case-insensitive "contains" matches. The box under each column filters that column; the search box matches any column. A filter starting with >, <, >= or <= compares numbers, so >100 keeps rows above 100, and = alone keeps empty cells.
  • Statistics are worked out from the rows the filters leave: how many cells are filled, how many distinct values, the most common value, and for numeric columns the minimum, maximum, sum and mean.
  • Pages of 100 rows, with the position shown, rather than an endless scroll: you can always see where you are and get back to it.

Files it reads

FileHow it is read
CSV, TXTComma, semicolon, tab or pipe, guessed from the first line. Quoted fields with commas and line breaks inside them are kept whole (RFC 4180).
TSVTab separated, the format a spreadsheet puts on the clipboard.
xlsx, xlsmEvery sheet, with a picker when there is more than one. Dates are shown as dates, not serial numbers. Password-protected workbooks open once you type the password.
JSONAn array of objects becomes one row per object and one column per key.
xls (Excel 97–2003)Not readable. Open it in Excel once and save it as xlsx.

Why not just open it in Excel?

Double-clicking a CSV in Excel changes it on the way in: leading zeros are dropped from codes such as 007, long IDs and phone numbers turn into 1.23E+15, and anything that looks like a date becomes one. This viewer shows every cell exactly as it is written in the file, which is what you want when checking an export before importing it somewhere else.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and parsed in your browser and the table is drawn there. There is no server that receives it, so you can open customer lists, salaries or logs without them leaving your computer.

How large a file can it open?

Files of a few hundred thousand rows open in a few seconds on a recent laptop, since only one page of 100 rows is drawn at a time. The limit is your browser's memory: a file of several hundred megabytes is better handled by a command-line tool such as xsv, miller or DuckDB.

Can I sort by more than one column?

Sort by the less important column first, then by the more important one. Sorting is stable, so rows that tie on the second column keep the order the first sort gave them.

How do I keep only rows above or below a number?

Type >100, <50, >=0 or <=9.99 in the box under a numeric column. A single = keeps rows where that column is empty.

What does "Copy for Excel / Sheets" do?

The button copies the filtered, sorted rows as tab-separated text, the format spreadsheets use on the clipboard. Click a cell in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers and paste, and the rows land in separate cells.

Why does my file show everything in one column?

The separator was guessed wrongly from the first line, usually because that line is a title rather than the header. Paste the text instead with the title line removed, or save the file again with a comma or tab separator.
