Which is bigger

A4 is 8 times the area of A7. They are 3 steps apart in the A series and each step halves the sheet, so the multiple is two to the power of 3. The number in the name going up while the sheet goes down is why this has to be asked rather than read off.

A4 is 136 mm wider than A7. A4 is 192 mm taller.

Why the shapes matter

The proportions differ: A4 is 1:1.41 and A7 is 1:1.42. That difference is why a layout moved between them never quite lines up — scale it to fit one edge and the other is left with 0.3 mm of unwanted margin.
